 Politics and MNPL

Often union members are asked to become active in politics or give money MNPL. You may ask why give money to MNPL? Hopefully this page can answer some of your questions.

MNPL is the name taken from the initial letters of the Machinists Non-Partisan Political League. MNPL was established in 1947 following labor's defeat in the battle to stop enactment of the Taft-Hartley Act.

MNPL is the IAM's arm for political action. The program and policies are reviewed each year by a National Planning Committee.

MNPL is not affiliated with or bound to any political party. MNPL is non-partisan in nature and its major goals are to encourage IAM members and their families to register and vote, to educate IAM members and their families on issues that concern them and the nation and to help elect friends and defeat enemies running for President of the United States, the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.

MNPL is committed to candidates that support programs that benefit union members and their families.

We should be proud of the fact that we belong to a union that is one of the most progressive and active politically. Our Union believes that our family's welfare and the welfare of our union is best served by being involved in politics and legislation.

So, please when asked to contribute time or money to MNPL, think of your family and your children and what is best for their future and please contribute.
